“Levelling Up CS is a national programme designed to increase the participation of women in Computer Science. We know there’s a long standing gender gap in the subject, and this initiative aims to address that by giving young women meaningful and confidence building experiences with computing at a key decision point in their education.
The programme is aimed specifically at female A Level students and is delivered through university departments. By connecting students directly with City St George’s, we’re able to give them a real sense of what studying Computer Science looks and feels like beyond school.
The structure of the programme has two main components. This includes an on campus visit, which is an important opportunity for students to step into the university environment and meet the people who’ll be supporting them. They also take part in nine sessions throughout the June 29, 30 and 1st July 2026. Five of these sessions are academic and developed by BCS — and they will be delivered virtually, in person, or in a hybrid format. The other four are non academic sessions, forming part of the university’s broader outreach activities, helping students connect the subject to real pathways and opportunities.
A key part of the delivery model is that all sessions run in small tutorial groups led by female undergraduate tutors. This near peer approach helps make the subject relatable, gives students role models they can identify with, and builds a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and exploring ideas.”
