“Come and celebrate the fascinating story of Muhammad al-Fulani, an 18th century scholar, mathematician and astrologer from Nigeria. He was known for publishing the Arabic mathematical scholarly manuscript titled, “A Treatise on the Magical Use of the Letters of the Alphabet”.”

“This school year the Heilbronn Institute is celebrating Black Mathematicians with Big Ideas.
Each term, Celebrating will introduce students to amazing mathematicians, past and present, and explore their field of maths with a special mathematical guest whether it’s logic or long division, measurements or mental maths, proportions or even planets!
The third and final Celebrating event of this school year wraps up with the fascinating story of Muhammad al-Fulani.”
The speaker is Lassina Dembélé and the event will be hosted by Bilkisu Labaran (you can find out more about them here, scroll down the page a little). All you’ll need on the day is the Zoom link and pen and paper, but see below for things you can share with your class in advance.

Find out more about…
Black computer scientists / mathematicians
We have a number of articles on the CS4FN (Computer Science For Fun) website about Black computer scientists which we hope you and your class will find interesting and inspiring.
Magic squares
You can also find out how to make your own magic squares too – if the 4×4 squares are a bit tricky try the 3×3 ones below. We also have free magic and maths books which you can download including a free chapter on Instant Magic Squares from Paul Curzon’s ‘Conjuring with Computation’ book (the book isn’t free but the chapter is!)
