The Computing Progression Pathways suggests that at the white level, on the theme of Data & Data Representation, a student should demonstrate that he/she:
- Performs operations using bit patterns e.g. conversion between binary and hexadecimal, binary subtraction etc. (Abstraction) (Algorithmic Thinking) (Generalisation)
- Understands and can explain the need for data compression, and performs simple compression methods. (Algorithmic Thinking) (Abstraction)
- Knows what a relational database is, and understands the benefits of storing data in multiple tables. (Abstraction) (Generalisation) (Decomposition)

- Data compression helps get information small enough to be transmitted quickly, so we can download texts movies and music.
