Philip Emeagwali: Supercomputing

Philip Emeagwali’s fascination with the natural world helped him create a supercomputer.

He realised how efficient bees were in building honeycombs in the hive, and used these ideas to create a supercomputer which was reportedly able to do over 3 billion calculations per second.

His computers are used to predict the weather and the effects of global warming.

CLASSROOM IDEAS

Science: Find out about bees and how they have inspired not only supercomputers but other ideas in our world (just search for bees in cs4fn!).
