QMUL’s School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science runs an annual series of free Saturday morning computing workshops, in partnership with the Royal Institution (of Ri Christmas Lectures and Holiday Workshops fame).

✳️ School teachers in London can contact the Ri to nominate their Year 9 students to take part in our six-week programme, or to find out about masterclasses happening elsewhere in the UK (see also their Ri Masterclasses page).

The QMUL computing workshops will take place on the following Saturday mornings at our Mile End campus, near Stepney Green station, from 10am to 12.30pm (students are expected to attend all six sessions where possible).

  • Saturday 14 February – Session 1 of 6 (all sessions are from 10am to 12.30pm with a short mid-point break)
  • Saturday 28 February – Session 2
  • Saturday 14 March – Session 3
  • Saturday 21 March – Session 4
  • Saturday 18 April – Session 5
  • Saturday 25 April – Session 6

[There are gaps between Saturdays to accommodate other events, and holidays].

What are Masterclasses?

Ri Masterclasses are extra-curricular workshops in mathematics or computer science. They nurture students’ curiosity and inspire them to continue STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) engagement into the future.

Through Masterclasses, students connect with scientists and STEM enthusiasts, gaining insight into the depth and breadth of these fields. Students are helped to realise that STEM subjects are for everyone, inspiring future science careers.

Our sessions at QMUL also support Gatsby benchmark 7 “Encounters with further and higher education“.
